The Art of Accounting…or making numbers dance!

Some of you know how much I HATE numbers. I am suffering through an accounting class this semester. (Or is it that my husband and the professor are suffering with trying to get me through the class?!) I have been in tears a number of times. It is not really about the grades. And I’m generally okay with making mistakes. But I am struggling to remember basic steps of accounting. They make NO SENSE to me whatsoever.

I joke that as a creative, outside-the-box thinker, I prefer words and pictures since I can make them dance. Numbers? They are expected to always do the same thing. They are boring. They can’t seem to ever dance.

I had an ah-ha moment the other day, when I was in tears yet again over these dreaded concepts of accounting. I realized I CAN make them dance! So…here in picture form is the Dance Party for the End-of-Year Closing of Accounts.

For my artsy friends, you may not understand the principles. (Welcome to the party!) For my number-loving friends, this may look silly. But I have high hopes I will now remember the story of Lola the next time I have to do these problems in accounting class!
