Nature’s Patterns

One of the things I enjoy most about wandering in the woods is searching for Nature’s patterns. The best examples are usually found by looking for small details. Here are a few of my favorites from a recent backpacking trip on the Appalachian Trail. This summer I plan to try some drawings and zentangles using these found-patterns.

Flowers are obvious items which display glorious colors and wonderful textures:flower patternsHave you ever studied a pine-cone? Even the disintegrating ones are intriguing. Just look at these intricate patterns: pinecone patterns 1pinecone patterns 2And don’t forget to look at stones along your path. I love the whimsy of what can be seen in the lichen growing on rocks. It reminds me of searching for shapes in the clouds! lichen patterns 1lichen patterns 2What fantastic patterns have YOU found in nature? And how do you incorporate these textures into your artwork? I would love to hear from you in the comments…
